Library Program Questionnaire: New Documents Library Program Questionnaire: New Documents

New Documents (Los Angeles, CA) is an art book publisher with a focus on experimental writing and and conceptual art.

A.R.T. Library Program Questionnaire gathers insights from librarians and publishers within the Program's distribution network to reconsider and reflect on what it means to make art books public today.

  • How would you characterize the books that you publish?

Books by artists. Experimental writing, books about language, and artist's books within a tradition of conceptualism.

  • How would you define the audience for your books?

Artists, designers, academics, and students.

  • How has the recent change in book distribution over the past five years impacted what and how you choose to publish?

We try to keep things affordable but with high production value. Limiting loss leader distribution contracts.

  • When did you start participating in A.R.T.’s Library Program?

2021.

  • How do you decide what to donate to the program?

We think about new modes of distribution and access to underserved audiences in the name of contributing artists while balancing stock storage levels and print run COGS metrics.

  • How does the A.R.T. Library Program complement your distribution strategies?

The A.R.T. Library Program allows a way to get books into permanent holdings that provide long term, stable, and free access to them.

Jeff Khonsary of New Documents (Los Angeles, CA) responded to this questionnaire in 2024.
